The Padres prevented a sweep towards the Cardinals Wednesday and a newcomer performed an enormous function.

That may be Kyle Higashioka, acquired within the Juan Soto commerce – and did all of it within the fourth inning of the Friars’ 3-2 win.

The catcher threw out two runners – Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado – making an attempt to steal second base, then added a house run within the backside of the inning for good measure.

It’s not unprecedented, in keeping with MLB.com. Former Angel catcher Benjie Molina completed the feat in 2000.

“I really feel that throwing out the blokes is form of my job,” the catcher advised MLB. “The homer is a bonus.”

Higashioka’s run turned out to be the distinction as Joe Musgrove, who went six innings, giving up 5 hits and one run whereas putting out seven, logged his first win of the season. Robert Suarez, in 1.2 innings of labor through which he struck out two, earned his third save.

The Padres’ different two runs scored on a Jurickson Profar stroll within the first and a Fernando Tatis Jr. power play within the second.

After an off day Thursday, the Padres journey to San Francisco for a three-game set, with Dylan Stop, Michael King and Matt Waldron set to take the mound. It’s not a protracted journey although – they return promptly on Monday to welcome the Chicago Cubs to Petco Park for 3 video games.
